7th-Grader Organizes 5K to Benefit Celiac Disease

Alex Morris may only be 12, but the seventh grader is going well beyond her years in organizing a 5K race to benefit a celiac disease charity. Alex, a student at Naperville's Washington Junior High, like many Americans, suffers from the incurable autoimmune disorder gluten-sensitive enteropathy that commonly is treated by abstaining from foods containing wheat products.

Woodland Hills, CA; February 18, 2014 — Celiac Disease Foundation (CDF) today released an interactive checklist to help individuals and families accurately define and report their symptoms of celiac disease and gluten sensitivity to their doctor or other health care practitioner.  This checklist not only will help individuals have more clear conversations with their healthcare providers, it will help more people with celiac disease get the proper diagnosis. This free checklist, developed with the CDF Medical Advisory Board, can be accessed at celiac.org/symptoms.

Usefulness of Symptoms as a Diagnostic Tool for Celiac Disease

Celiac disease (CD) is the most common genetically-induced food intolerance and is thought to be present in about 1% of the world’s population. Many cases of CD go undiagnosed until adulthood but mass screening for CD for the entire population is controversial. Instead of serological (blood serum) screening for CD markers as a first step, a questionnaire could be an alternative to identifying those at risk for CD. A recent study in Sweden by Rosen et al. examined strategies for screening children for CD. Published online by Pediatrics on January 13, the study had 12-year-old children and their parents complete questionnaires about symptoms of CD and family history.
