The tragic events in the areas affected by Hurricane Harvey have given us numerous examples of how communities can come together and support one another in a time of need. The Gluten Intolerance Group and the Celiac Disease Foundation are the trusted resources for the celiac disease and gluten-free communities. We have received many requests from generous individuals who want to help those affected by the storm – specifically those who may be in need of safe, gluten-free food. Food insecurity is burdensome enough on its own, but having celiac disease, a food allergy, or a food intolerance can be even more challenging.

The best way to help members of the gluten-free community in the Houston area is to make a donation to the San Antonio Food Bank, which is leading the efforts for all of Texas. We have been informed that monetary donations have the biggest impact; you can specify that you would like your donation allocated toward allergy-friendly food by writing so in the notes section of their online form.

If you would prefer to send non-perishable, gluten-free food to Texas, you can mail your donation to the Gulf Coast Community Services Association, which maintains a food pantry with a section for special diets. Please mail your donation to:

Gulf Coast Community Services Association
9320 Kirby Drive
Houston, TX 77054

You can also donate gluten-free food to your local food pantry and speak with a representative about allergy-friendly food; most request that your donation is clearly labeled as allergy-friendly or gluten-free.
