Earlier this month, the Society for the Study of Celiac Disease hosted their first quarterly webinar of 2024 on “Underrepresented Populations in Celiac Disease.” The webinar featured three prominent speakers: Dr. Javier Villafuerte-Gálvez from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dr. Amanda Cartee from the University of Alabama Hospital Center, and Dr. Haley Zylberberg from Columbia University Medical Center. The presenters shared insight into their research and raised valuable discussions about the challenges that underrepresented populations face in celiac disease.
Key takeaways from the presentations included:
- When addressing disparities in celiac disease diagnosis, management, and treatment, it is important to consider the existence of profound knowledge gaps, different eating habits (preferences and cultures), and language barriers.
- There may be a gap in testing, diagnosis, and healthcare access among underrepresented and underdiagnosed populations.
- By addressing these challenges, we can better support individuals living with celiac disease and ensure they have access to the resources and information they need to manage their condition effectively.
During the webinar, the Celiac Disease Foundation and SSCD announced the launch of the Improving Health Equity in Celiac Disease Through Disparities Research Award. The grant award will be open to eligible researchers working to reduce the disparities in celiac disease diagnosis, treatment, and management among diverse populations. The announcement of this award during the webinar generated excitement and enthusiasm among attendees.
This collaborative initiative between Celiac Disease Foundation and SSCD is a continued step toward advancing research and improving patient care for those affected by celiac disease.
