A new research study published this week in BMJ Medicine affirms research conducted by Dr. Benjamin Lebwohl, through a Celiac Disease Foundation grant, which found that a lack of gluten in the diet may affect cardiovascular risk.
While people with celiac disease generally have fewer traditional risks for heart disease, researchers at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom found that they may be 27 percent more likely to develop heart disease compared to people who do not have celiac disease – and the longer someone has the disease, the higher the risk.
To conduct the study, researchers used a database of genetic and health information from a half-million people in the United Kingdom to explore any connection among celiac disease, heart disease, and traditional risks for cardiovascular disease.
