The Celiac Disease Foundation Prize for Excellence in Celiac Disease Research recognizes investigators whose research is judged to have made a significant contribution to the field of celiac disease research. The Prize is awarded annually in the amount of $25,000 USD and is presented at a Digestive Disease Week (DDW) reception sponsored by the Celiac Disease Foundation.

The Prize Laureate must be an individual whose research has made a significant contribution to the field of celiac disease and must be living at the time of award and able to accept the award at the DDW reception sponsored by the Celiac Disease Foundation. The prize is awarded solely on the significance of clinical, translational, or transformative research and its impact on celiac disease patients, and is awarded based on actual research contributions, and not for the establishment or development of a research institution or research infrastructure.

To avoid the appearance of conflict of interest, employees of for-profit pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies will not be eligible. Prior Prize Laureates are not eligible for nomination, but prior nominees who were not selected in previous award cycles may be nominated in subsequent award cycles with no limit. Previous recipients of the Warren Prize for Excellence in Celiac Disease Research or the Maki Celiac Disease Tampere Prize are not eligible for nomination. English is the official language for the prize administration, including the nomination process, deliberations, and associated materials as described herein.

Nominations for the Prize Laureate are made by members of the selection jury and by the celiac disease community at large through an open call for nominations. The prize is not open to application. Jurors are asked not to discuss or confer regarding potential nominees or actual nominations with other jurors prior to or outside of official deliberations. The Celiac Disease Foundation will coordinate directly with all nominees on all aspects of the nomination process.

The Celiac Disease Foundation will make an open call for nominations of no more than 500 words to give the community an opportunity to suggest nominees for the prize. Only those nominations submitted during the timeframe specified by the Celiac Disease Foundation will be considered, and the Foundation will compile all nominations and distribute them to the selection jury. Any person writing a nomination is prohibited from making contact with jurors regarding nominations. Violating this rule will result in the withdrawal of the nomination.

Selection Process

A quorum of five jurors must be present for the entirety of deliberations. Jurors who are nominated for the prize and accept their nomination may not serve on the selection jury. The deliberations will be confidential and closed. In addition, names of all unselected nominees shall remain confidential.

Announcement of Laureate

Coordination of the announcement of the Prize Laureate will be the responsibility solely of the Celiac Disease Foundation. The prize will be officially conferred upon the Prize Laureate at a reception at DDW, or by similar ceremony. The Prize Laureate will be provided with two round-trip coach airfares and hotel accommodation for up to two nights.

The Prize Laureate will present a lecture at the DDW reception, or similar ceremony, at the time of presentation of the prize.
