The Center for Celiac Research and Treatment at Mass General for Children (MGfC) has appointed Maureen Leonard, MD, MMSc as its new director. Dr. Leonard, who previously served as the Center’s clinical director, succeeds Alessio Fasano, MD. Dr. Fasano will continue treating patients and contributing to research at MGfC.

A pediatric gastroenterologist, physician-scientist, and person with celiac disease, Dr. Leonard brings extensive experience in clinical care, research, and education. In 2023, Dr. Leonard received the Celiac Disease Foundation Young Investigator Prize for Clinical Science. She is also the co-chair of the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, & Nutrition (NASPGHAN) Celiac Special Interest Group (SIG).

Dr. Leonard has been instrumental in leading studies on celiac disease prediction and prevention, including the CDGEMM study, which examines genetic and environmental factors influencing disease development. Dr. Leonard also oversees clinical trials and research initiatives focused on discovering biomarkers for celiac disease and developing new treatment options. Her work plays a key role in advancing patient care and shaping best practices for managing celiac disease.

Her appointment marks a significant step forward in the Center’s mission to improve patient care, advance research, and support the celiac disease community.
