Probiotics Use in Celiac Disease: Results from a National Survey, a study led by Columbia University and Celiac Disease Foundation researchers, was an Outstanding Poster Presenter recipient at the 2020 American College of Gastroenterology Annual Scientific Meeting. Andrew Joelson, MD, Gastroenterology Fellow at the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University, and his team examined probiotic use in the Foundation’s iCureCeliac® patient registry population. Since 2017, this is Dr. Joelson’s fifth study utilizing iCureCeliac data. Provided by patients committed to accelerating the discovery of better treatments, diagnostics, and, ultimately, a cure for celiac disease, iCureCeliac® empowers researchers to uncover disease patterns and answer questions most important to patients.

Results of the present study showed that roughly one-third of celiac disease patients report using probiotics, indicating they may be seeking additional means of treatment for persistent symptoms. Patients on a gluten-free diet who were still experiencing symptoms were twice as likely to use probiotics as patients who reported controlled symptoms.

Add your data to our iCureCeliac® patient registry today. iCureCeliac® is a free online portal for patients, or their caregivers, to provide critical insights into life with celiac disease. Your participation will help create better diagnostic tools and treatments for cross-contact and gluten consumption, governmental policy changes, and access to new and innovative clinical trials nationwide, which may, one day, cure celiac disease.
