The Celiac Disease Foundation is proud to share that for the second year in a row, access to funding for celiac disease research is being made available through the U.S. DOD Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (DOD-CDMRP)Peer Review Medical Research Program.

The Celiac Disease Foundation has joined forces with the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) Foundation to introduce two groundbreaking awards specifically designed to advance celiac disease research. These initiatives aim to foster novel research endeavors, emphasizing the importance for medical professionals to delve into the complexities of this lifelong autoimmune condition. 

As we continue our journey toward advancing awareness and understanding of celiac disease, it is crucial that we reflect on health equity and the persistent clinical disparities within our community—so that together we can confront these factors and dismantle barriers hindering access to care and support.

Earlier this month, SSCD hosted their first quarterly webinar of 2024 on “Under-Represented Populations in Celiac Disease.” During the webinar, the Celiac Disease Foundation and SSCD announced the launch of the Improving Health Equity in Celiac Disease Through Disparities Research Award.

Dr. Esen Sefik, PhD, an immunologist and an Associate Research Scientist in the Flavell Lab at Yale School of Medicine, is the recipient of the Celiac Disease Foundation–Takeda Early Career Research Award, an award designed to support promising early-career researchers working toward independent and productive research careers in celiac disease.  

A new study published in the journal Gastro Hep Advances finds that a considerable proportion of Black patients with biopsy-confirmed celiac disease had negative diagnostic blood tests. Traditionally perceived as predominantly affecting non-Hispanic White individuals, this study underscores the importance of bridging existing research gaps to better serve underrepresented populations.
