Dr. Kagnoff received his M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School and completed post doctoral training and specialization in Gastroenterology and Immunology at Boston University and the Salk Institute in La Jolla, CA.  He joined the faculty of the University of California San Diego in 1972 where he is currently Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Pediatrics.  Dr. Kagnoff currently directs a multidisciplinary program in mucosal immunology funded by the National Institutes of Healthand the Celiac Center at UCSD.  He is recognized worldwide as an authority in mucosal immunology and mechanisms leading to Celiac Disease. He has made numerous important contributions to the understanding of inflammation and functioning of the immune system in the intestinal tract.  His current research has a special focus on the molecular basis host-microbial interactions, and mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of Celiac Disease.
